Allison Genis, senior Girl Scout of Troop 941, completed the requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award in May. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest honor in Girl Scouts. To earn this award, the Girl Scout must:

• Earn the Girl Scout Gold Leadership Award: A girl must serve 30 hours in a leadership role and complete three “Interest Projects” (merit badges) and one “Focus Book” relevant to their project.

• Earn the Girl Scout Gold Career Award: A girl must complete 40 hours of career exploration.

• Complete the Girl Scout Gold 4Bs Challenge: A girl must assess her community and its needs by visiting with community leaders and organizations. After choosing a project, she must develop a vision for change.

Once these requirements are met, the Gold Award candidate must complete a community service project. Genis’ Gold Award Project was to assess customer satisfaction for the DeKalb Public Library. Genis developed a survey and conducted it at the library, DeKalb High School and online, and then tallied the results of the survey to evaluate customer satisfaction.

She then presented the results at the DeKalb Public Library Board meeting in June. Results of the survey will be used by the library board to measure customer satisfaction and to decide what areas need improvement. The library board has already begun evaluating the results and addressing the most pressing issues.
