Many environmentally conscious students of Indian Valley Vocational Center are members of the school’s Green Team.

The returning Green Team members from last year’s original group kicked off the new school year with a meeting on Oct. 6. Goals and plans to expand conservation efforts were discussed, as well as fundraising ideas. It was reported that classroom recycling was going well, with more recycling containers needed in a few areas. Students and staff currently recycle paper, plastics and aluminum and will soon begin weighing recyclables to have tangible evidence of the amount of materials being diverted from landfills.

On Oct. 13, Green Team members helped plant tulip bulbs around the little white schoolhouse on the grounds of IVVC. Not only did students learn bulb-planting techniques, but also simple landscaping concepts and will look for the red tulips springing up next May. Funds to purchase the bulbs were donated from the Graphics Communications class from its recycling pin sales proceeds. Students also participated in roadside clean-up along Lions Road.

Among the programs working to be greener is Automotive Technology, which now turns on the overhead shop lights just before the shop is used each morning, saving 1-1/2 hours per day of energy use. Several recycling boxes can be found throughout the shop areas, as students are encouraged to recycle metal, in addition to paper, plastics and aluminum. Used oil goes to a business that utilizes it as heating fuel.

IVVC is owned and operated by 11 school districts: Earlville District 9, Hinckley-Big Rock District 429, Indian Creek District 425, Leland District 1, Newark District 18, Paw Paw District 271, Plano District 88, Sandwich District 430, Serena District 2, Somonauk District 432 and Yorkville District 115.
