SYCAMORE – About a dozen people were waiting when the county clerk's office opened Monday morning so that they could turn in their papers and make their candidacy official.

Monday was the first day that candidates could file nomination papers to run for county offices that expire in 2010 – including clerk, treasurer, sheriff, state's attorney, regional superintendent, precinct committeemen and 12 county board positions.

County Clerk Sharon Holmes said that 32 petitions were filed the first day. Petitions can be filed through Nov. 2.

"We have had a lot of people file already," Holmes said. "A lot of countywide offices have been filed for, and there are some county board offices that have got candidates."

For a mid-term election, the amount of petitions filed the first day has been typical with past years, she added.

Lotteries will be held for three offices because more than one candidate of the same party filed at the same time.

Typically, names are listed on the ballot in the order that they were received and filed. But in the races for state's attorney, clerk and sheriff, candidates of the same party filed simultaneously. A lottery will determine the order names are placed on the ballot for the Feb. 2, 2010 primary election.

For the DeKalb County State's Attorney, a lottery will be held to determine ballot position for current state's attorney John Farrell and opponents Sarah Gallagher Chami and Karen Wilkerson, all vying for the Democratic nomination.

A lottery in the Republican sheriff's race will determine ballot position for County Sheriff Roger Scott and opponent Wesley Hoadley in the primary election.

And for the open seat as county clerk, Republicans John Acardo and Joe Simons will draw lots to find out where their names are placed on the ballot.

Other filings include Democrat Jim Luebke for county clerk, Republican Chuck Rea for state's attorney, Christine Johnson for treasurer, nine county board candidates and 13 precinct committeeman candidates
