KIRKLAND – The Hiawatha football program had a renaissance season. But it will not head to the IHSA 2009 football playoffs.
The Hawks (5-4) had their first winning season in 22 years but were not one of the 256 playoff teams. The cut off for five-win teams was 38 playoff points. The Hawks finished with 35 playoff points.
“I’m devastated,” Hiawatha coach Sean Donnelly said. “Our kids did a great job not giving up after we were 0-3. We’ve had a great season and I am so proud of the way this team handled themselves.”
Donnelly hopes the winning season can propel the Hawks’ football team to unprecedented levels.
“I think a winning season shows that we can win at Hiawatha,” Donnelly said. “I think it will help bring more kids out and motivate our players in the weight room in the off season. We want to put ourselves in a situation where we are watching the selection show and the pairing show but getting our names called.”
Hiawatha beat North Shore County Day 47-8 in the season finale on Friday.
Sandwich (5-4) was the first team out of the playoffs with 37 points.
