SYCAMORE – Sycamore has prided itself in being diverse in the running game all season, with plenty of formations and options to stop.
But the Spartans ran into a running game that was even more dynamic than theirs Friday night.
With versatile quarterback Trace Wanless running behind 6-foot-2, 235-pound fullback Austin Teitsma and speedy Connor Douglas coming in motion, Glenbard South’s running game was too much to stop in the Raiders' 32-20 win at Sycamore’s Engh Field.
“That quarterback is the real deal,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said. “[Teitsma] is a heck of a blocker. That’s just a power side off the edge and if you go too far that way, then they’ll run their T-action with their quarterback going the other way.”
The Raiders (7-2, 6-1 Western Sun) locked up a share of the final conference title with Geneva before becoming an independent next season behind 250 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns from Wanless and 351 yards on the ground overall.
Glenbard South started both halves quickly, gaining a two-touchdown lead in the first half before the Spartans (6-3, 4-3) came back to tie the score at halftime.
In the second half, however, Sycamore couldn’t find enough momentum to come back completely.
“We were always fighting from behind,” Ryan said.
Sycamore got 159 yards on 20 carries from Marckie Hayes while senior quarterback Trevor Mathey ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another on a 19-yard connection with fellow senior C.J. Compher.
Mathey played in place of sophomore quarterback Ryan Bartels, who missed the game because of disciplinary action.
“We played a good team,” Ryan said. “There were some things we could have done better, but we certainly didn’t get beat by a bad team.”
The Spartans will find out today who their first-round playoff matchup will be as they likely will be on the road in a Class 5A game next weekend.
