Barbed Wire Bus Tour
reservation deadline is today for the tour at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Joseph F. Glidden Homestead and Historical Center in DeKalb. Call the Homestead message line at 815-756-7904, and include your name, the number of people in your party and a phone number. Cost is $8 per person and seating will be limited on the TransVAC bus. Payment by check can be mailed in advance to 921 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb, IL 60115, or cash will be collected before the bus tour’s departure on Sunday. This exclusive tour will be led by local historian Steve Bigolin and is part of the Glidden Homestead Patent Day celebration of the 135th anniversary of the day Joseph Glidden received his patent for “The Winner” barbed wire – Nov. 24, 1874. Special displays, Homestead tours and refreshments also will be part of the day’s events, with the Homestead open from noon-4 p.m. Sunday.

DeKalb loose-leaf collection: 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, alternating weekly through November north and south of Lincoln Highway, with vacuum trucks collecting leaves from   the parkway, directly behind the curb or gutter line, between the sidewalk and the street. Leaves should not be raked into the street as that may cause flooding by blocking the storm sewers. Leaves also may be placed in open garbage cans or yard waste bags for curbside collection on regularly scheduled garbage pickup days, or in landscape waste containers at specified locations. Mom’s Time Out Days:

Bread for the World lunch meeting: Noon Tuesday at Baptist Campus Ministry, 449 Normal Road in DeKalb, will include a free light lunch. “What to Tell Your Congressmen About Hunger” will be the topic Zach Schmidt speaks about to the DeKalb Chapter of Bread for the World. According to a recent news release, Schmidt notes that the number of hungry people is on the rise both at home and abroad. Schmidt studied theology and worked for social justice before joining the BFW staff a year ago as a field organizer working out of the Chicago office. BFW is a national lobbying group that has advocated on hunger issues for 35 years. “Bread for the World has made great progress in 2009 to begin reforming U.S. Foreign Assistance to better fight hunger and poverty throughout the world,” Schmidt said in the release. “In 2010, we will turn our attention to the problem of childhood hunger within our borders.”

Sycamore Park District “Belly Dance” class for adults: 6:30-7:30 p.m. for six weeks, beginning Nov. 5, at the Sycamore High School Field House. Sandra Schramel will teach this middle-eastern dance style that develops grace and coordination with fun.
