GENOA – Genoa-Kingston's passing offense has made strides the past two weeks, and especially in the past six quarters, as the Cogs' offense has started to use the pass to set up the run.
Quarterback Craig Billington has thrown for 213 yards the past two weeks, including 92 and a touchdown during G-K's 44-20 loss to Stillman Valley this past Friday at G-K.
"Some of that is just because we're struggling to run the ball," G-K coach Bill McCarty said. "I'd rather run the ball a little more."
G-K managed only 97 rushing yards on 38 carries this past Friday against undefeated Stillman Valley. The Cogs ran the ball a lot early to try and keep the ball out of the Cardinals' hands.
"We were just trying to keep [Stillman Valley] honest," McCarty said. "I didn't want that clock to stop and keep going. Some of the game plan was to try and keep that going."
Few positives: McCarty said the effort of his team on Friday was good, but there wasn't a whole lot to point to in terms of positive plays.
"We did some things well," he said. "There were some things we still didn't do well. I just think overall that [effort] was a plus. We played hard. We gave up too many big plays."
Players of the Week
Offense: Matt Volkening was the Cogs' leading rusher with 55 yards on only three carries. The wide receiver also led G-K through the air with 44 receiving yards on three receptions.
Defense: Austin Bankson was in on several tackles for loss and allowed the Cogs to hang with the Cardinals for as long as they did.
