SHABBONA – A Lockport man was taken to the hospital with hypothermia after falling out of his boat on Shabbona Lake Saturday night, according to the Illinois Conservation Police.
Conservation Police Sgt. Robert Frazier said Sunday that Kenneth J. Broughton, 50, fell into the 49-degree water about 5:50 p.m. About 20 minutes later, an off-duty Hancock County sheriff's deputy and his wife were bicycling near the spot and saw Broughton clinging to the side of his boat. The pair called for help and Broughton was rescued from the water and taken by ambulance to Kishwaukee Community Hospital.
"He said he was pulling up on the anchor and he slipped and fell overboard," Frazier said. "The temperature of the water is 49 degrees, so he was pretty darn cold after being in there 20 minutes. It would have been a pretty different outcome if those people hadn't come by when they did."
Frazier said Broughton was being treated at the hospital for hypothermia. Sunday afternoon, hospital staff said he was still being treated and no condition report was available.
