Prep Roundup: Kaneland 2nd, Sycamore 3rd at WSC boys XC meet

Kaneland edged Sycamore for second place while Geneva was victorious at Saturday's final Western Sun Conference boys cross country meet at Kishwaukee Community College in Malta.

That was the Knights' best finish in the four years of WSC competition.

"It was a successful day for our program, though on the whole we were kinda flat," Kaneland coach Chad Clarey said.

Sycamore senior Tyson Kinsley was second (15:41.6) while DeKalb's Nick Schrader (15:53.9) was third individually while Kaneland's Matt Reusche (16:03.3) was fifth and Trevor Holm (16:07.3) was sixth.

Sycamore senior Ryan Fraedrich (16:13.5) closed out the top 10 at the meet.

Knights finish fourth: Sycamore was sixth, DeKalb was seventh and Kaneland finished fourth at the Western Sun girls meet in Malta.

DeKalb's Danielle Dlabal, a freshman, was the top local finisher in 12th place (19:29.6). Kaneland's Andie Strang (19:37.1) was 13th.

"Andie Strang earned her third consecutive all conference medal in a very tough field," Kaneland coach Doug Ecker said.

Girls Tennis

Behrens headed back to state:
Sycamore High No. 1 singles player Veronica Behrens qualified for her third consecutive state tennis meet on Saturday at the St. Charles East Sectional.

After a bye, she beat Wheaton Academy's Emmy Gaffey 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. Then she beat Geneva's Carly Ausman 6-2, 6-3 in the third. Then she lost to St. Charles North's Liselot Koenen 2-6, 5-7 in the semis. She will play North's Brittany Plaszewski for third at 4 p.m. Monday.


Girls Volleyball

Sycamore takes third:
Sycamore went 3-2 at the Crystal Lake Central Tournament to take third place.
 
The Spartans (27-6) started the day with a 25-22, 25-21 loss to Marian before beating McHenry 22-25, 29-27, 25-16. They then defeated Richmond-Burton (25-16, 25-13) and Antioch (25-17, 25-6) before falling to the tournament hosts, 13-25, 26-24, 25-22.
 
"After the Crystal Lake game, we now know we can compete with anyone, we just have to finish," Sycamore coach Debbie Klock said. "I think the girls played really well."
 
Evyn McCoy finished with 32 kills and 13 blocks. Justine Schepler led the defense with 47 digs and have seven aces. Brittany Olson added 32 kills, and Jill Johnson ended with 106 assists, eight blocks and seven aces.
 
Royals finish 9th: After losing three matches to start the day, the Hinckley-Big Rock volleyball team (22-8-1) won its final two matches at the Plano Tournament.

The Royals beat Genoa-Kingston (23-25, 25-18, 15-11) and Serena (25-19, 25-18) to salvage ninth place.

Sandwich (4-19-1) won one match with a tie and two losses to take eighth place. The Indians' lone win came against LaMoille (25-20, 25-24) in a match where Dani Pearson led the way with seven service points, three aces, three kills and a block along with seven digs. Taylor Anderson added five kills.

Knights finish fourth: Kaneland went 4-1 to finish fourth at Sherrard.

The Knights beat Morrison (21-10, 21-10), Mercer County (21-10, 21-12), Illini West (25-14, 25-23) and Ridgewood (25-16, 25-17).

Jessica Lubic had 79 assists and 21 aces while Katy Dudzinski had 32 kills and seven aces and Abby Vanderheyden had 12 kills, four aces and 27 digs for the Knights (12-14). Kylie Siebert added 29 digs.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Kishwaukee sweeps Dells Tournament:
The Kishwaukee volleyball team extended its winning streak to 27 matches after sweeping its own Wisconsin Dells Tournament on Saturday.

The Kougars (30-2) went 5-0, and notched victories over NJCAA Division No. 1 Columbus State, No. 4 Kirkwood, No. 11 Hagerstown and No. 18 Central Community College-Columbus.
 
"Come Wednesday, we should be back at No. 1 in the nation," Kishwaukee coach Ron Sweet said. "We had a nice weekend and I'm really proud of the girls."
