Volunteers, explorers needed for Spooky Science Saturday

By DAILY CHRONICLE
The NIU Chemistry Club will offer kids the opportunity to make take-home slime at Spooky Science Saturday, this week at NIU, which will include more than 100 interactive exhibits and hands-on activities.

Spooky Science Saturday is from 1-5 p.m. Saturday in Faraday Hall and Faraday West on the Northern Illinois University campus in DeKalb.

Visitors will begin the event with tours of the laboratories in Faraday West, and then go through the tunnel on the lower level that connects the buildings to see displays featured in darkened laboratories, which will include periscopes, glowing liquids, a duck-in kaleidoscope, a flash/shadow wall, a levitating globe and fun-house mirrors. Visitors can don “rainbow glasses” and ponder the lightning bolts in a plasma globe. A fog machine will be used for visualization of lasers.

Participants can arrive any time during the open-house event. Entrance is free, although a $2 donation is suggested; donors will receive “mood pencils.” Free parking will be available in the NIU Parking Deck along the west side of Normal Road, about one block north of Lincoln Highway.

A limited number of school groups can be accommodated before the 1 p.m. opening to the general public. Groups of more than 15 people are asked to RSVP to make arrangements by Monday to Pat Siever at psievert@niu.edu.

Area teachers who volunteer to help will earn Continuing Professional Development Units. They also will receive an advance tour of the displays and a booklet on how to create similar displays for their classrooms.

The Haunted Physics Lab is sponsored by NIU STEM Outreach, the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. For more information, see www.outreach.niu.edu/stem/haunted_lab.shtml.
