SUMC organist hits 25-year markCraig Fritz was a senior accounting major at Northern Illinois University when he heard that the Sycamore United Methodist Church was looking for an assistant organist. Two years later, he found himself the head organist and now he is observing his 25th anniversary in the position. Fritz had a good background in music, having played the piano since age 7, and got his first and only organ, a Gulbransen, during high school. It is the same instrument he still uses today at his Sycamore home. His musical sideline became more involved after longtime Sycamore organist Helen Dean passed away in 1985 and he was asked to step into that role. He has played continuously each Sunday since then, except for about eight weeks a year when he takes a break. Fritz has enjoyed his musical relationship with the choirs, directors and some 16 or so pastors with whom he has served, according to a news release. He said he favors Contemporary Christian music “with guitars and drums.” His favorite classical piece is Igor’s “Toccata,” which he often chooses to play at Easter time. Fritz will be honored with a presentation at both the 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. services Sunday at Sycamore United Methodist Church, 160 Johnson Ave. A reception in his honor will take place between services. |
