‘Seussical’ opens Friday

Dr. Seuss’ best loved children’s characters come alive on the stage of the Sandwich Opera House beginning this weekend.

The Indian Valley Theatre production features the Cat in the Hat as emcee, Horton the elephant, and a hill of Whos in a whirling blur of color and motion. It’s a family-friendly show that will charm both adults and children.

The children’s author, whose real name is Theodore Geisel, was born March 2, 1904. As the world celebrates his 105th birthday, characters such as Horton the elephant and Mayzie the lazy bird still fascinate readers of any age who love to think.

Colorful costumes fill the Opera House stage preparing the audience for the bright colors that Dr. Seuss loved. The costumes for the 31 cast members were designed by Cheri Montavon of Sycamore.

Mayzie, played by Nikki Hambly of Leland, struts her way around the stage in style. Four lavishly dressed bird girls sing, dance and swish their gorgeous feathers to back up Mayzie and Gertrude McFuzz, portrayed by Sarah Haines of Sheridan. Throughout this fast-moving musical, the Cat in the Hat is never far away. Played by Cornelius Marr of Sugar Grove, the Cat smoothly adds his devilish pranks as he weaves the story in rhyme.

“The music isn’t easy,” said music director Susan Webb in a news release. “The rhythms are tricky and the harmonies are unusual, but this cast stepped up to the task and mastered the music.”

“Seussical: the Musical” is at the Sandwich Opera House Friday-Sunday and Oct. 23 and Oct. 25. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Reservations can be made by calling the Opera House Box Office at 815-786-2555.
