CAMPUS VISITS: Howells' role increases

By NICK GERTS - ngerts@daily-chronicle.com

Josh Howells has seen his playing time increase two-fold for the Olivet Nazarene football team this year.

The former Sycamore standout has added wide receiver to his duties for the Tigers (2-4) after spending last season as the team’s kicker. Howells is the team’s fifth-leading receiver with 13 receptions for 225 yards, which is good for a 17.3 yards-per-catch average. He also has a touchdown, which came on a 22-yard pass in a 56-35 win against Southern Nazarene on Sept. 26.

The sophomore is also the team’s second-leading scorer with 29 points. He has nailed two of his four field-goal attempts and is 17-of-18 on PAT conversions.

On Saturday, Howells tallied four points after converting on four extra-point attempts in Olivet Nazarene’s 28-7 victory against Trinity. He also had two catches for 13 yards.

Howell had a season-best 117 yards on five receptions in a 58-20 loss to St. Xavier on Sept. 19.

Lubic sees time on links: Kaneland alum Curtis Lubic has received only one opportunity to play this season for the Augustana men’s golf team. He shot an 84 in a one-round effort at the Duane Chaney Invitational on Sept. 11 to finish in a tie for 84th place.

Thrower, Indiana fall to Northwestern: Sam Thrower finished with eight kills on 19 attempts, but saw her Indiana volleyball team fall in five games (17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 15-13) to Northwestern on Sunday.

The freshman, who graduated from Sycamore, helped the Hoosiers (13-7) to a 53-kill performance in the loss. Thrower finished with a 21.1 hitting percentage and had four blocks in the defeat.

On Saturday in a 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 loss to Illinois, Thrower finished with two kills on eight attempts.

The middle blocker has 61 kills on 144 attempts, good for a 1.61 kills-per-set average, in 17 matches played. She also has seven digs and 31 blocks.
