Bethlehem to host fall party and chili cook-off

A full day of autumn-inspired fun is in store at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Oct. 24. Kicking off the event is the annual Halloween party from 3-5 p.m.

Children are invited to come in costume and enjoy the festivities and have their photo taken in costume – then fashion a frame to go with it. Visit the craft booth to make a special Halloween art project. Create a colorful and delicious Halloween cookie – then eat it or take it home.

Other activities include a Halloween cupcake walk, Halloween Bingo, holiday mind bogglers, crossword puzzles, coloring and sidewalk chalk designs. Light snacks and juice also will be served.

The highlight of the party is the piñata at 4 p.m. Several piñatas will be prepared, each for a specific age group.

“We always look forward to the annual Bethlehem Halloween party,” said Mary Lasits, director of youth and outreach at Bethlehem, in a recent news release. “This much-anticipated annual celebration provides a safe place for area children to show off their costumes and enjoy this fun-filled holiday.”

The party is free and open to the community. Parents are requested to attend the party with their children.

The Second Annual Chili Contest will round out the day, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. All are invited to participate in this communitywide event. Enter your favorite chili in one of four categories – meat chili (no beans); meat and beans chili (any heat range); hot chili; and vegetarian chili – or just enjoy the samples and join in the judging. Each vote costs $1 with proceeds benefiting Mount of Olives, an ELCA ministry supporting Augusta Victoria Hospital and Palestinian Christians in the Middle East. Last year’s grand champion was Tom Holden of Naperville.

Bethlehem Lutheran Church is located at 1915 N. First St. in DeKalb. For more information, call 815-758-3203 or visit www.bethlehemdekalb.org.
