Church to host film series

By DAILY CHRONICLE

For those interested in movies with a message, Westminster Presbyterian Church is presenting a Sunday evening Faith and Film Series.

Beginning Sunday, all are invited to view and discuss the first film of the 2009-10 series: “Defending Your Life.” This fantasy/comedy with Meryl Streep and Albert Brooks repeats one of Jesus’s most frequent messages.

Films will be shown at 830 N. Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb at 6 p.m. the first Sunday of the month, October through May.

This educational program is free and open to the public.

Larry Werline, the host of  Westminster’s Faith and Film Series, has selected seven films, a mixture of comedies and dramas designed to promote discussion and learning. The eighth film to be shown May 2 will be chosen by this year’s faithful viewers. Following are the films chosen for this year’s Faith and Film Series.

• Oct. 4: “Defending Your Life,” a fantasy/comedy about judgment in the afterlife.

• Nov. 1: “Gran Torino,” an adult drama with Clint Eastwood playing a retired blue collar worker who gets involved with his Hmong neighbors.

• Dec. 6: “The Nativity,” a family film, that retells the Christmas story from the perspective of the three wise men

• Jan. 3: “The Gods Must Be Crazy,” a comedy erupting from an African’s discovery of “civilization” in the form of a Coke bottle which has fallen out of the sky

• Feb. 7: “Glory,” an adult drama with some violence. Black soldiers fight for their freedom during the American Civil War. Denzel Washington won an Academy Award for his performance in this film based on true events. This moving tale is just in time for Black History Month.

• March 7: “Wall-E,” an animated family film that appeals to all ages and has a meaningful message for all.

• April 4: “Doubt,” an adult drama set at a Catholic school in the Bronx  in 1964 depicting the struggle between a priest and a nun over the possible abuse of the  school’s first black student.

These films have been selected for Westminster’s adult education outreach program; however, several are appropriate for the whole family. Come for one, some or all of the films.
