Sarah Cullen’s return to DeKalb County last week ended with a four-game loss to the Northern Illinois volleyball team.
The former Sycamore standout led DePaul with 13 kills and 16 digs, but her effort wasn’t enough as the Blue Demons suffered a 25-27, 25-16, 25-22, 27-25 defeat on Sept. 22. Cullen’s double-double was her eighth this season.
On Friday, Cullen notched a team-best 14 kills in a four-game loss to St. John’s to increase her double-digit kills mark to 10 on the season.
Cullen, who was named to the Big East All-Academic Team in 2008, is DePaul’s leader in kills with 207 while boasting a 16.6 hitting percentage this season. The senior is averaging 3.29 kills per game and also is on top of the digs chart with 195.
The outside hitter enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2008 by leading DePaul in kills (415) and digs (312). Cullen has 859 kills and 1,030 digs in her career with the Big East program.
Horton near top of NIU scoring list: Sophomore midfielder Brad Horton finds himself in second place on the NIU men’s soccer goal list, as the Sycamore alum has scored four goals this season.
Horton, a 2008 College Soccer News All-Freshman Second Team and All-Mid-American Conference Second Team selection, has 10 points on a season that sees the Huskies off to a 5-3-1 start. Horton trails Luis De La Cerda by one in both categories, and has the fifth-best goal mark in the Mid-American Conference.
Horton had a hand in the Huskies’ 2-0 victory against former NIU coach Steve Simmons’ Oregon State program. Horton scored the second goal of the match in the 74th minute to ice the win.
Finucane also in second: DeKalb graduate Shannon Finucane has four goals and two assists to help lead the North Central College women’s soccer team to a 6-2 record. Finucane is in second in goals and points with 10.
Finucane scored her latest goal in a 4-1 victory against Eureka on Sept. 19. She tallied the last goal of the game on a header from Dominique Collins at the 77:10 mark.
