Building communities at the block party

| Shaylie Lopez, 10, of DeKalb lobs a softball at the trigger that will send DeKalb High School Principal Doug Moeller splashing into a dunk tank Sunday at the first community block party hosted by the DeKalb Human Relations Commission at Hopkins Park.
"At least its a warm day," Moeller said as he dried off. "A lot of students – especially high school students – seemed enthusiastic to line up for me."
The four-hour picnic featured children's activities, information tables for nonprofit organizations, vehicles from the DeKalb police and fire departments, food and live performances in the band shell. The goal of the event was to build relationships within the community and between the city and Northern Illinois University campus. (Dana Herra – dherra@daily-chronicle.com) |
