Go construct a kite
|
| Pictured here in flight is a block-printed kite constructed by Al Stark, who will host a Saturday morning workshop at the Ellwood House Visitor Center. |
Although primarily designed for children ages 6-12, anyone interested in kites is invited to attend a kite-making workshop from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the Ellwood House Museum Visitor Center, 509 N. First St., DeKalb; enter at the parking area near Augusta Avenue and Linden Place.
Instructor for the workshop will be local artist and kite-maker Alfred Stark, who has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University and has exhibited his own kites at the “Art at Ellwood” art show for several years. In 2007, he won a special merit award for his block-printed rice paper kites.
No advance registration is needed. A $5 participation fee per child includes all materials to make a “beetle” kite. Parents are welcome to assist free of charge. Kits to make a box kite and “flying squirrel” kite also will be available for purchase. If the weather cooperates, a kite-flying demonstration will be held from 11 a.m.-noon on the Ellwood House grounds.
