CAMPUS VISITS: Newquist scores 1st NCAA goal

By NICK GERTS - ngerts@daily-chronicle.com

Nici Newquist helped lead the Northern Illinois University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Liberty this past Saturday.

The former Sycamore standout scored the Huskies' first goal of the match after receiving a pass from Micaela Damas that crossed through the defenders to Newquist. The freshman then kicked the ball over Liberty's goalkeeper with 8:51 remaining in the first half.

The goal was Newquist's first of her collegiate career.

Newquist is joined by local athletes Sara Cervenka, who graduated from Sycamore High School this past May, and junior Becca Ford, who is a DeKalb High School graduate.

The Huskies open Mid-American Conference play this weekend, when they play host to Bowling Green at 4 p.m. Friday and Toledo at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Belrichard tallies game-winner: Newquist wasn't the only former Sycamore girls soccer standout to enjoy a memorable weekend.

Newquist's former Spartans teammate, Brittany Belrichard, handed the Millikin women's soccer team a 1-0 overtime victory against Heidelberg College on Sunday. The junior tallied the lone goal of the match 44 seconds into the overtime stanza.

The goal is Belrichard's fourth of the season, which is good for second on the team. She has started in all eight matches and has nine points on the season. Belrichard has 32 goals and 10 assists in her collegiate career.

Heckert earns her second all-conference award: Kaneland alumna Kristen Heckert has continued her stellar senior season with the University of Illinois-Chicago after earning her second Horizon League Cross Country Runner of the Week award.

Heckert won the Illinois Intercollegiate 5K race in a time of 17:37, which was a new personal best. She was 18 seconds better than the second-place finisher, Kirsten Lang of Illinois State.

Heckert also earned Runner of the Week honors in the first week of the season after winning the 2-mile race on Sept. 5 at the UIC Home Opener.

Former DeKalb standout Grace Millhorn also competed at the Illinois Intercollegiate, finishing in 104th place with a time of 20:16. Millhorn is a freshman for UIC.
