LOCAL BRIEFS: Sycamore Hall of Fame to induct Class of 2009

Sycamore Hall to induct 2009 class

Sycamore High School will induct the 2009 class into its Athletic Hall of Fame today. Members of the class are Ron Fox (soccer, Class of 1989), Stacey Maurer (basketball, 1999), Josh Schmitt (football, 2003), Brad Horton (soccer, 2008) and the 1958 football team.

Fox scored 44 career goals and was all conference in basketball and baseball his junior and senior years.

Maurer is the all-time leading scorer in girls basketball with 1,290 points, was a three-time all-conference player, a three-time team MVP, and an all-conference MVP in her senior year.
Schmitt is the all-time leading rusher (3,456 yards), all-time leading scorer (204 points and 34 touchdowns) and was all-state as a junior and senior.

Horton was a 2007 High School All-American, 2007 conference MVP, was 2006 All-Midwest, a three-time all-conference player and holds school records for career goals (98), career assists (47), goals in a season (43), assists in a season (20), consecutive games with a goal (19) and hat tricks in a season (8).

The undefeated 1958 football team shut out five of the eight teams they played and gave up only 27 points all year. This is the fewest number of points given up in any season for a Sycamore team. They outscored their opponents, 217-27. Their season was the first of four consecutive undefeated seasons led by Pete Johnson and was a part of the school’s longest winning streak of 33 wins in a row. They were led by Ralph Quinn, Mic Stevens and Billy Smith.

Hall of Fame festivities begin with a 2 p.m. today social followed by the Hall of Fame induction and dinner in the auditorium and cafeteria at Sycamore High.

H-BR Middle School soccer invites alumni

The Hinckley-Big Rock Middle School soccer team invites all past players and alumni to attend their game Wednesday. The team will face Earlville at 7 p.m. at Hinckley-Big Rock High School. This will follow the H-BR varsity match with Paw Paw, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Middle School players from the past will be recognized before the 7 p.m. game.
