SYCAMORE – Bail was set at $500,000 Friday for a DeKalb man charged with 24 counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault.

DeKalb police arrested Gerardo Zamora, 32, of the 1000 block of Pembrooke Lane on Thursday after learning he was also wanted on a failure-to-appear warrant for driving under the influence, DeKalb Lt. Gary Spangler said.

Investigators found out about the sexual abuse through interviews with the victim, who is an acquaintance of Zamora and is a teenager younger than 17, according to court documents. The victim first confided in a friend that he and Zamora had been engaging in sex acts for one year, Spangler said, and the friend then told the police.

The estimated 24 sexual occurrences happened between July 1, 2008, and July 1, 2009, according to court documents.

"It was happening for over a year at both the victim's residence and the suspect's residence," Spangler said on Friday.

All 24 counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault are Class 2 felonies. If convicted, each charge is punishable by up to seven years in prison and $25,000 in fines.

Zamora is next scheduled to be in court July 16, when he is expected to request a reduction in bail.
