DeKalb man charged in Chicago shooting

DeKALB – A DeKalb man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after police say he shot at a Chicago police officer while in the city this weekend.

Willie E. White, 26, of the 700 block of Russell Road in DeKalb, was arrested earlier this week and charged with attempted murder, as well as unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and aggravated assault, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Police were called about 10 a.m. Sunday to reports of a man with a gun, according to a written statement from the Chicago Police Department.

A man matching the description given to officers fled when police arrived, according to the written statement. The man fired one shot at an officer while in the 1500 block of South Ridgeway Avenue in Chicago, according to police.

No one was injured, and police did not return fire, according to the statement. The gun was recovered in the backyard of a residence in the 1500 block of South Lawndale Avenue; the two avenues are about a block away from each other.

Police began searching for the suspect that night and White was arrested Monday, according to police.
