Sycamore woman faces gun charge

SYCAMORE – A Sycamore woman faces charges she shot a hole in the door of a Sycamore apartment.

Valerie Smith, 33, posted bond at the DeKalb County Jail on Monday and was released. She is accused of reckless discharge of a firearm and drunken driving, police said.

Deputies with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office received a report about the gunshot around 7:15 p.m. Sunday, police said in a written statement. Smith, of the 100 block of Liberty Lane, is the tenant in the apartment next door to where the hole was found, police said.

Smith reportedly aimed a 9 mm handgun at another woman and ended up shooting through a door, Associate Judge William Brady read from court documents during bond call at the DeKalb County Courthouse. No one was injured, he said. The offense is a Class 4 Felony.

Prosecutors said Smith’s blood-alcohol content registered at .14, nearly two times the legal limit for driving in Illinois.

She was also charged with driving under the influence and driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol content greater than .08, after arriving intoxicated at the scene for questioning, police said.
