Local Roundup: 16U Hurricanes hitting stride

On Sunday, June 28, the the 16U DeKalb Hurricanes beat Oswego, 11-1,

MacKenzie Johnson had a double and Brandi Underwood and Karli Beauchamp each had singles. Pitcher Alysha Guy had four strikeouts in four innings, Johnson had three strikeouts in three innings and Beauchamp had two strikeouts in one inning.

Mallory McGee saved a run with a catch in left field and kept Oswego from getting another run with a nice throw from left field to keep an Oswego runner at third base.

On Monday, June 28, the Huricanes had a win over Oswego, this time, 17-2. 

Katie Basic had a triple. Ellyn Clark, Johnson and Guy each had a double and a single. Carly McGee and Darien Ryan each had two singles. Johnson struck out six in four innings.

The Hurricanes finished first in league play and are the No. 1 seed in the Little Seven Tournament, which will be held July 7-9 in Geneva.

On July 3, the Hurricanes  kicked off the Geneva firecracker tourney with a 1-1 tie against the Lockport Pythons.

The Huricanes were lead offensively by Johnson (single), Ashley Paulsen (single), Kelcee Miller (single), McGee (single), Ryan (single) and Guy (double). Basic had two double plays at second base.

Huntley Middle School to host J-Barbs volleyball camp

The ninth annual DeKalb J-Barbs volleyball camp will run from Aug. 3-7 at Huntley Middle School.

For third, fourth and fifth graders, camp will go from 8:30-10 a.m. For sixth, seventh and eighth graders, camp will go from 10:30-12:30 p.m.

Team USA wins Junior World Championship

CANTON, Ohio – Bryce Petty threw three touchdown passes without throwing an incompletion and the United States won the gold medal at the Junior World Championship Sunday with a 41-3 victory against Canada.

Jordan Lynch, who will play for Northern Illinois in the fall, had one tackle in the victory while playing safety.

Virginia Tech running back David Wilson rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown to help the U.S. win the first world tournament of American football for players age 19 and under.

The U.S. roster of incoming college freshmen crushed France and Mexico in the first two rounds by a combined score of 133-0..

Petty, from Baylor, connected on a number of short passes that turned into long gains, like Kevin Cummings’ 47-yard touchdown catch late in the third quarter. Lirim Hajrullahu’s 38-yard field goal late in the first for Canada was the only score the Americans allowed in the tournament.
