
July Fourth happeningsMunicipal Band to present holiday show DeKalb’s Fourth of July “Salute to the Veterans and Members of the U.S. Armed Forces” will be at 8 p.m. Saturday at DeKalb’s Hopkins Park. The program will feature the DeKalb Municipal Band, directed by Dee Palmer. Recording artist Lisa Nemeth will headline the show, which will feature patriotic music, the traditional “1812 Overture” with the sounds of canons and church bells. Veterans from the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will present the flags as narrator Stephen Wright will recite General Douglas MacArthur’s “Duty-Honor-Country.” There will also be a fireworks display coordinated with the music of the band. The city of DeKalb and the DeKalb Park District, which co-sponsor the concert, invite all to attend. The Marlyn Majorettes and Majors Drum Corps of Sycamore will celebrate the Fourth of July in three communities this year. Members will entertain parade spectators with their flashing, spinning batons and flags as they march to Beatles music played by the drum corps. The first festival parade is at 11 a.m. Saturday in Kirkland. The corps will then travel to the annual Mount Morris “Let Freedom Ring” parade at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the corps will be featured as unit 14 at the Crystal Lake Gala parade. The Majorettes captain is Samantha Fisher of Kingston. Color guard co-captains are Kelsey Colness of Sycamore and Emily Groezinger of DeKalb. Corps director Marlyn Burkart of Sycamore, color guard coach Rob Barrow of Oregon and drum corps instructor Timothy Foster of Rochelle will accompany the unit on its festival parade appearances. The 21-piece Rick Falato’s Yorkville Big Band will perform big band swing music at 8 p.m. Saturday for the Fourth of July. The outdoor show will feature fireworks to coincide with the band’s patriotic musical selections. The band will be set up next to Nelson’s Funeral Home, located on Route 47 and a block north of Route 34. All are invited, and reminded to bring lawn chairs if desired. – Daily Chronicle |
