‘Stop at the stop signs’

To the editor:

On Monday evening around 8 p.m., after a trip to the garden center to purchase flowers and then stopping for a few groceries, my wife Patsy and I were an eyelash away from losing each other and leaving our kids and grandchildren.

We were southbound on Pearl Street at Cherry Valley Road when we were hit broadside as result of someone who chose to either ignore or not pay attention to the four-way stop sign. The EMS (Kirkland Volunteer Fire and Rescue and Kirkland Police) were on site nearly immediately. Luckily, there were no life-threatening injuries. We were transported to the hospital. Patsy has a broken rib and some possible shoulder injury. The passenger side of the vehicle took the “hit.” We are eternally grateful that the injuries were not more severe. We too, are very impressed at the level of care and attention we received from the emergency personnel who responded. At all times we were treated with dignity and respect.
Thanks to all of you.

I cannot say any louder or clearer: Stop at the stop signs.

The people who know me know very well about my crusade in the Village of Kirkland to have the police department watch for and arrest all who violate the stop sign ordinance. “Stop” does not mean “slow down.” I now will be more of a pain in the butt than I have ever been on this subject.

I swear if I had a grandmother who did not stop for a stop sign, I would have her “busted” for it. If anyone doubts my resolve, I guess you have that right. I have my rights – and it is my right, as well as the right of every other citizen of Kirkland, be they senior citizens or the precious babies – to expect safe streets and responsible drivers. I will from this day forward have a pen and paper ready to copy a license number of a violator. I will be happy to go to court as necessary.

I owe this to my wife and family. I will be taking care of business.
