DEKALB

Saturday

The DeKalb Municipal Band will present a special salute to veterans and members of the armed forces and fireworks show at 8 p.m. at Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road/Route 23. Lisa Nemeth, night club, concert and recording star will headline the show. The band will play patriotic music along with the traditional 1812 Overture with the sounds of cannons and church bells. Veterans from the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will present the flags, as Stephen Wright recites General Douglas McArthur’s “Duty – Honor – Country.”

The DeKalb Municipal Band traces its history to 1854, when a small group of musicians fresh from the California Gold Rush formed the Silver Coronet Band. A city band in DeKalb has existed for 155 years, despite wars and the Great Depression.
