Folk musician to give two concerts

Continuing the “Journey Stories” themes, the Sycamore History Museum will present a concert by folk musician David Drake on the museum’s lawn at Engh Farm, at 1730 N. Main St.

The public, especially families, is encouraged to bring picnic dinners to enjoy as Drake shares travel songs as part of his Heartland program.

Heartland, a multimedia historical program of folk songs, stories and images that cover the width and breadth of the state of Illinois, focuses on the unique aspects of Illinois, including songs of trains, rivers, the prairies and the lives of Abraham Lincoln and Carl Sandburg, and poems of Sandburg.

Drake plays a variety of handmade and historic instruments including Indian courting flute, mountain banjo, dulcimer and concertina, in addition to guitar. Some of his songs include “The Rivers of Illinois,” “Land of Lincoln” and the Illinois state song.

“We booked Drake because of his great reputation for family programs and his songs complement the ideas explored in the ‘Journey Stories’ exhibit,” said Michelle Donahoe, Sycamore History Museum’s executive director.

The free Sycamore History Museum program begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. If there is rain, the concert will be moved into the museum’s garage. For more information, call 815-895-5762 or visit www.sycamore history.org.

Drake also will appear at DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St., performing “North American Folk Songs” at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. This concert, with folk songs, stories and singalongs, will be free and open to all ages. Contact Theresa Winterbauer at 815-756-9568, ext. 3, or theresaw@dkpl.org for more information.
