Man shoots self near Shabbona school

A New Mexico man recently indicted for selling stolen American Indian artifacts was found early Friday morning near a Shabbona school with what authorities say were two self-inflicted gunshot wounds to his chest.

Steven L. Shrader, 56, of Santa Fe, was found about 1 a.m. behind Shabbona Elementary School, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office. The department was called about 10:40 p.m. Thursday about a despondent person after Shrader left a relative's home on foot, according to a written statement from the sheriff's office.

Authorities located Shrader behind the school after an extensive ground search that included both officers and a search dog, according to the statement. Deputies and Shabbona Fire and Rescue personnel provided first aid until the arrival of a medical helicopter, which airlifted him to Rockford Memorial Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at 2:18 a.m. Friday in the emergency room of the hospital, Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia said. An autopsy performed Friday afternoon determined he died of a gunshot wound to the chest, she said.
