Hillcrest Covenant to host block parties
Hillcrest Covenant Church invites the community to its first summer BLOCK party in its backyard at 1515 N. First St. in DeKalb on June 28. The party, with the theme, “Wind Night,” will run from 4:30-7:15 p.m.

Old-fashioned block parties had been a typical summer neighborhood activity in the past. HCC will revive that tradition with an addition to its meaning: Because We Love Our Community and Kids.

The party will begin at 4:30 p.m. with outdoor activities such as kite flying, table games and art-and-craft projects. At 5:30 p.m., there will be a potluck picnic. At 6:15 p.m., a short devotional time will be held, followed by dessert.

The BLOCK party is HCC’s alternative to Vacation Bible School to include its church family, its AWANA kids and parents, previous VBS students and parents and the Hillcrest neighborhood.

If you cannot attend this BLOCK party, future ones are planned: “Old-fashioned Sing and Ice Cream Social” on July 19; “Take You Out to the Ballgame” on July 27; “Water Night,” on Aug. 9 and “Wheels Night” on Aug. 23.

For July 19 and Aug. 9, the events will be held on the church’s lawn. For the ballgame party, the first 65 tickets to a Kane County Kougars game are free to those who sign up in the church foyer. The bus will leave the church at 5 p.m.

At 3 p.m. Aug. 23, a road rally will be held for people 8 years and older. Those age 7 and younger can bring their bike, big wheel, razor, doll carriage or skateboard for “Fun with Wheels.” Dinner and dessert will follow.

St. John hosting vacation Bible school

St. John Lutheran Church in Sycamore will host vacation Bible school from 9 a.m.-noon July 6-10. The theme this year is “Gadget’s Garage (God’s Always Doing Great, Exciting Things).” Sign up now for five days of fun, discovering how “Jesus Makes All Things New.” Making new friends, exploring Bible stories, singing great songs, and making awesome crafts will all be a part of the week’s adventures.

For more information, call 815-895-4477. Register at the church at 26555 Brickville Road.

DeKalb church hosting toddler signing class
DeKalb Advent Christian Church is sponsoring an infant and toddler signing class. Signing can encourage earlier communication by teaching children gestures or signs. This can help them to more quickly understand and communicate with the world around them.

This class, led by Rachel Cain from Oregon, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at DeKalb Advent Christian Church, 803 State St. in DeKalb. The church is on the northeast corner of Seventh and State streets. For more information, call 815-899-6229.
