Salvation Army to host auction

DeKALB – Thousands of items will be for sale Saturday during an auction at The Salvation Army food pantry in DeKalb.
Cribs, high chairs, strollers, art supplies, storage units and electronics will all be included in the sale, which food pantry coordinator Jennifer Warren says has been a long time coming.
"You just cannot even fathom what we have here," she said on Tuesday, comparing the auction to an estate sale. "There are thousands of items that have been stacked ceiling-high in half of our building. Were tired of looking at it. The time is right for this."
Toys and playground equipment being stored at The Salvation Army is from a daycare that served about 150 children at the site more than four years ago, Warren said. The center hasn't re-visited the idea of a daycare program because the economy is "not right," she added.
An auctioneer from Almburg Auctioneering in Malta will donate his time and services on Saturday.
"There is no reserve," Warren said. "People can come in and buy stuff on the cheap and the money goes right back into the community. Everybody wins."
Money raised will support the local branch of The Salvation Army. Warren said she hopes to raise around $10,000, though any funds would qualify the day as a success.
Those interested in seeing items before the sale can view them on Friday between noon and 5 p.m. at The Salvation Army food pantry on Grove Street.
"Whatever money we get is great because it's going to be serving our local community," Warren said. "All are welcome to come out and see what they can find."
