Midwest Museum keeps a full schedule this summer

SATURDAY

11 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

“Picture This!”: Brown’s Oakridge Zoo will showcase exotic baby animals born this spring: possibly a cougar, leopard and bear. Afterward, get your picture taken with a lion or tiger cub for a small fee.
 
JULY 6-SEPT. 23
 
“Wildcats of the World”: Contemporary paintings of extraordinary cats by artists Rochelle Mason and Linda DuPuis-Rosen will be featured in a traveling exhibit. Opening events are July 11-12.
 
AUG. 1-2

“I Like Spiders & Snakes Weekend”: Dozens of varieties of spiders and snakes will be on display, with demonstrations throughout the weekend.
 
AUG. 23

2-3 p.m.

“Amazing Animal Adventure”: Twelve animals from the live animal collection of Amazing Animals by Samantha will be showcased, including an African serval cat, a biturong (bearcat) and several trained animals that have appeared on Animal Planet and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Photo opportunities will be available after the show for a small fee.


 
Summer classes (registration required)

JULY 10

10-11:30 a.m.

“Microscope Miniworld”: Investigate the world unseen by the naked eye and learn the proper use of various types of microscopes. Ages 9 and older, $10; ages 5-8 w/adult, $15. Class size is limited. Registration required, 815-895-9777.
 
JULY 11, Aug. 8

9-11:30 a.m.

“Fossil Digs”: Come as an individual or as a family, bring a bucket, and get ready to unearth evidence of prehistoric life at Vulcan Materials quarry. Cost is $15 per person or $50 per family. Class size is limited. Registration required, 815-895-9777.
 
JULY 21-22

10 a.m.-noon

“Exhibit Building”: In this two-session class, participants will design, construct and label a permanent exhibit for the museum. The exhibit on taxidermy also includes learning how animals are preserved and mounted using various forms, glass eyes and other supplies. Actual taxidermy will not be performed. Ages 9 and older, $50. Class size is limited. Registration required, 815-895-9777.
 
 
JULY 31

10 a.m.-noon

“Shark Dissection”: Receive a hands-on lesson in anatomy through the dissection of a dogfish shark. Each participant will work on their own specimen. Ages 9 and older, $22. Class size is limited. Registration required, 815-895-9777.
