DeKalb native completes Army basic training

Army Pvt. Adam S. Peters of DeKalb has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, Peters studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Peters is the grandson of Bonnie Kittle of Ninth Street in DeKalb.

Peters is a 2006 graduate of DeKalb High School.

Malta man to deploy for second tour in July

U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. Cris Cavazos of Malta will deploy in July for a second tour of duty, to last one year. Cavazos’ family will hold a going-away party from 5-9 p.m. Saturday at Pizza Villa in DeKalb.

Friends, family members and members of the community are invited to attend.
