Apartment damaged in grease fire

No one was injured Saturday in an early morning grease fire that caused about $1,500 in damage to the kitchen of a DeKalb apartment.

Firefighters were called about 2:30 a.m. Saturday to an apartment on the 800 block of Russell Road in the University Village apartment complex, according to a written statement from the DeKalb Fire Department.

The first firefighters found a large amount of smoke in the apartment but that the fire had been extinguished prior to their arrival, according to the statement. The fire started on a stove top in the kitchen, were grease had been heating. The fire reached the walls, cabinets and ceiling adjacent to the stove, according to the statement.

The fire was contained to the kitchen area of the apartment and no other occupants of the building had to be relocated.
