Lincoln commemoration art contest: Deadline to enter at Flewellin Memorial Library, 108 W. Comanche in Shabbona; contact: 815-824-2079. All residents of the Indian Creek School District can enter artwork featuring the life of Lincoln. Awards will be issued to the top three entries in four age-related levels: students to and including grade 5; students grade 6-8; high school students; and adults. Entry level winners will be given gift cards, $25 for first place, $15 for second place and $10 for third place. Participants can use the medium of their choice but must incorporate the theme of the life of the country’s 16th president, who left a lasting legacy with his honesty, leadership and determination from 1860 to his assassination in 1865.  Entries will be judged and on display in the library until July 6. Awards will be given during the Shabbona Home Town Fourth of July Festivities.

DeKalb County Chapter of Mothers & More open houses: 7 p.m. Thursday and June 25 at n the community room of the Ben Gordon Center, 12 Health Services Drive, DeKalb. Area women can learn more about the group which is joining more than 150 chapters and 6,000 members. Mothers & More is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of mothers through support, education and advocacy, addressing mothers’ needs as individuals and members of society. Genoa-Kingston Food Pantry food drive: 1 p.m. Saturday at the Genoa Days Parade. Volunteers will push grocery carts and collect non-perishable food items from parade on-lookers. Another event during the 50th Anniversary Genoa Days will be the King and Queen contest at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

DeKalb County Youth Service Bureau  Active Parenting of Teens class: 6-8 p.m. six Wednesdays, beginning June 24, at DeKalb County Youth Service Bureau at 330 Grove St. in DeKalb. Cost is $50 per family for one textbook and attendance at all six sessions. Local parents of young people ages 11-18, who feel their teens misbehave and are out of control can enroll. DeKalb Music Boosters: 7 p.m. fourth Thursday each month at DeKalb High School Music Room. Volunteers are sought to help with the DeKalb Music Boosters Corn Fest Craft Fair. Annually, the craft fair raises about $10,000, which helps fund programs for DeKalb middle and high school music students, such as sending the DHS Jazz Ensemble to Essentual Ellington, a prestigious competition in New York. Anyone who would like to help the students are invited to planning meetings throughout the year.

‘Customized Living’ art exhibit reception: 7-9 p.m. June 26 at DeKalb Area Women’s Center Galleries, 1021 State Street in DeKalb. The exhibit is open from 7-9 p.m. Fridays through June 26. Old North Grove School Days: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 27 and 1-4 p.m. June 28 at the one-room schoolhouse at 26745 Brickville Road in Sycamore. Highlights of the event are tours of the old schoolhouse, complete with a “Swedish Schoolmarm,” maypole dances, old-time buggies to view, lunch on Saturday, Ice cream social on Sunday, with old-fashioned games conducted at 2 p.m. both days.
