Truman's Ridge to play at Sycamore UMCBy DAILY CHRONICLEThe spacious lawn of Sycamore United Methodist will become a stage at 6:30 p.m. June 20, featuring bluegrass music from Truman’s Ridge. The public is welcome. If weather doesn’t cooperate, the program will be moved inside. It would be appreciated if concert-goers would bring a blanket or lawn chair. Preceding the concert will be a Saturday celebration service in the sanctuary at 5 p.m., and a picnic supper at 6 p.m., hosted by the youth of the church. The proceeds of the dinner will help fund MYF’s summer mission trip to an American-Indian reservation in Montana. There is no charge for the concert, but a free-will offering will be taken. One of the musicians in Truman’s Ridge is Bruce Wallace, son of SUMC members D. and Marla Wallace. The group has appeared as part of many community celebrations in DeKalb, Sycamore and Naperville. Traditional bluegrass music and some gospel music will be included in the 90-minute concert. The summer event is the latest in a concert series that is partly funded by a bequest from longtime SUMC choir member Jessie Viner. The most recent attraction was concert pianist Jim Hendricks, who drew a packed house in May to hear his renditions of American classics “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Somehwere Over the Rainbow” and “Georgia on My Mind.” Jim is also the son of SUMC members James and Kathy Hendricks. Upcoming events include Mitch McVickers, a member of Rich Mullin’s band and co-author of many of his songs, who will lead the Saturday celebration at 5 p.m. July 11. On Oct. 7, the church welcomes the Grammy-winning quartet The Blackwood Brothers. Members of the church are also featured in the concert series, including the Christmas and Spring choral celebrations, and a potluck following the Aug. 30 worship services that will include Good News Men’s Quartet, directed by Doug Elder, who is also current chairman of the Concert Committee, and folk singers Marcia and Paul Watson. The concert series is an addition to a full music program at Sycamore United Methodist. A 45-voice adult choir, three children’s choirs, three handbell groups, two praise teams, a youth ensemble and a youth orchestra offer a wide variety of music styles for all ages. The church is located at 160 Johnson Ave. in Sycamore, off Route 64. For more information about the concert series or music program, contact Bev Rauch, director of music, at 815-895-9113, ext. 106. |
