Three horses that survived a one-vehicle crash on Tuesday afternoon were in good health Wednesday.

One of the four horses involved in the crash was euthanized Tuesday, said Sycamore resident Susan Lloyd, 67, who was driving the vehicle during the crash.

“He just had a really bad leg injury that wasn’t going to be fixable,” she said.

Lloyd was driving west on Route 64, near Malta Road, around 1 p.m. Tuesday when the horses shifted weight inside the trailer, tipping over and pulling the SUV along with it, police said.

Lloyd and three of her grandchildren were on their way to take the horses riding.

After the crash, the horses were taken to a property by Lloyd’s relatives, who own them, she said. Malta Veterinary Hospital employees examined the animals after they were taken from the crash scene.

“We had a lot of good Samaritans who came and helped,” Lloyd said.

Lloyd and two passengers, age 16 and 12, were uninjured. A third passenger, 19-year-old Kelly Ostrom of Shabbona suffered minor injuries, but she was not taken to a hospital for treatment, Bomar said.
