Indian Valley issues awards, scholarships

Indian Valley Vocational Center hosted its annual awards night on May 19 at Timber Creek Inn and Suites in Sandwich.

Local and memorial scholarships were presented, as well as recognition of Technical Honor Society members, SkillsUSA award winners and one-year perfect attendance recipients.

The highlight of the evening was the recognition of graduating seniors with certificates of completion.

Seniors from IVVC’s 16 career and technical programs were presented with certificates based on 450 hours for first-year students and 900 completion hours for second-year students.

The following students were recognized as “Most Outstanding” in their programs: James Karns of Somonauk in auto body repair, Andrew Hendricks of Somonauk in building trades, Jordan Goodrich of Sandwich and Michael Livingston of Leland in remodeling, Christopher Foster of Yorkville in computer technology, Ivette Nunez of Plano in cosmetology, William Norman of Sandwich in drafting and design, Mackenzie Abens of Sandwich  and Alexis Kalaitzakis of Leland in early childhood development, Eric Jones of Yorkville in fire science,

Alicia Raff of Newark and Austin Tuestad of Indian Creek in graphic communications, Aubrey Thompson of Somonauk in health occupations, Jessica Key of Sandwich in health occupations II, Lindsey Plante of Sandwich in hospitality management, Matthew Kimmey Jr. of Sandwich and Tyler Reboletti of Yorkville in law enforcement, Daniel Childress of Sandwich and Ty Staton of Plano in sports medicine/management, and Adam Iverson of Plano in welding and fabrication.

The following students were recognized as “Most Improved” in their program areas: Eric Decho of Yorkville and Robert Kelm of Earlville in auto mechanics, Robert Hook of Sandwich in building trades, Katelyn Stanek of Somonauk in cosmetology, Nick Gottlieb of Somonauk in drafting and design, Krysten Sebby of Yorkville in fire science, Brandi Tripp of Sandwich in health occupations II, Elvia Valles of Sandwich in hospitality management, and Clint Houghtby of Indian Creek in welding and fabrication.

Scholarships were awarded to the following students: Jessica Singer of Sandwich (WCC Gustafson Scholarship), Michelle Skinner of Sandwich (Ray Larsen Memorial), Dakota Pike of Sandwich (Rotary Club), Dan Underwood of Sandwich (Marcia Murphy Memorial), Karly Simmons of Sandwich (Rhonda Quinn Memorial), James Karns of Somonauk (Connie Olson Memorial), David Einhaus of Plano and Jonathan Williams of Somonauk (Doran Grief Memorial), and Shelbie Schulser of Indian Creek (Rose Grief Memorial).

Recognition was given to those students who received awards at the State SkillsUSA Conference in Springfield. Indian Valley Vocational Center Technical Honor Society students also received Certificates of Merit.

These 44 juniors and seniors maintained a cumulative 3.0 GPA at their home schools and a straight-A average in their IVVC program for the 2008-2009 school year. One year perfect attendance certificates were also awarded to 33 IVVC students.   

Indian Valley Vocational Center is a career center for high school juniors and seniors located in Sandwich. Eleven school districts (Earlville, Hinckley-Big Rock, Indian Creek, Leland, Newark, Paw Paw, Plano, Sandwich, Serena, Somonauk, Yorkville) participate in the Indian Valley cooperative, which currently offers 16 career and technical programs.

IVVC has been in operation since 1975 with an anticipated enrollment for the 2009-2010 school year of 530 students.
