Southeast gets guest speaker

Lynelle Benson’s fifth-grade health classes at Southeast Elementary School in Sycamore recently welcomed guest speaker Justin Carlson of DeKalb. Justin, Jason Carlson’s younger brother, is carrying on Jason’s desire to share his life story.

Last year, Jason visited the fifth-grade classrooms; however, this past fall, Jason passed away, so Justin is carrying on his legacy. Jason had diabetes and was a three-time kidney recipient.

Justin impressed upon them the importance of having a positive attitude and overcoming difficulties in one’s life. He shared with the students how Jason’s passion for the Chicago Bears earned him the unique distinction of being named the Chicago Bears Fan of the Year in 2004.

Justin Carlson is in charge of the upcoming annual Golf Outing/Walk for Juvenile Diabetes on Saturday at River Heights Golf Course in DeKalb. It will continue to honor his brother, Jason, and raise awareness and support for a cure for Juvenile Diabetes, the National Transplant Assistance Fund and TAILS.
