
Stock Market Game wraps up spring sessionBy DAILY CHRONICLEIn a tight race, both DeKalb and Sycamore schools came out ahead in the end to win the 2009 spring semester of The Stock Market Game – DeKalb County Challenge. On May 14, a team of students from DeKalb High School and a team from Sycamore Middle School were honored with awards at a reception at the Northern Illinois University Holmes Student Center. In the high school level, a team from Scott Schumacher’s class at DeKalb High School took first. Emily Ducatte, Stephen Guillote and Amyah Plenty came in first place with a final equity value of $121,330. A team of students in Kara Poynter’s class at Sycamore High School took second, while a team in Barbara Leach’s class at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Sycamore took third. In the division for grades 4-8, Andy Baccheschi, Zach Henning, Jessica Johnson, Morgan Morreale and Curtis Swartzendruber, students in Dave Meyer’s class at Sycamore Middle School, took first place, with a total equity value of $126,671, followed by their fellow classmates who took second and third places. A team from Wright Elementary School in Malta also showed the highest equity value of $110,956 among other elementary school teams. All students were awarded with medals, certificates and T-shirts. Scott Schumacher and Dave Meyer were also awarded with gift cards and T-shirts. The SMG program is provided free to all schools within DeKalb County through lead sponsorship from Edward Jones Investments, with additional support from Castle Bank. Econ Illinois also recognized a team from Sycamore High School for coming in first place in the state in the fall semester of The Stock Market Game. Teacher Cheryl Maness had a team of Brian Burke, Matt Exner, Eathon Larsen and Jerry Oldham, which finished with a portfolio value of an impressive $188,016. Also recognized at the award reception were Jefferson Elementary School students Muhammad Aidiladha Mohamad and Muhammad Fitri Mohamad, both winners of the state Economics Concepts Poster Contest. Fitri, a fifth-grader at Jefferson, won a regional honorable mention with his poster illustrating “scarcity.” Aidil, a first-grader at Jefferson, won one of 12 first-place spots in the state with his depiction of “specialization” and will have his poster printed in the 2010 Economics Poster Calendar.
