Local developer clears trees for town homes

DeKALB – A local developer is clearing his Sycamore Road property of trees to make way for a new cluster of town homes.
The 6-acre lot is in the 1300 block of Sycamore Road, adjacent to Hopkins Park and Parkside Drive Apartments in DeKalb. The land – behind Wendy's restaurant – is zoned for multi-family housing, said Denise Weinmann, realtor with Milner & Associates Commercial Real Estate.
The real estate company is handling the future sale of the town homes, but Weinmann declined to comment on any details.
Its owner, Boyce Besinger, is planning to build 76 town home units, said Joel Maurer, engineer for the City of DeKalb. A site plan has been submitted to the city for approval, he said, but Besinger did not need officials' permission to cut down trees because the property is private.
"The project looks like it's slow moving," Maurer said. "There are many phases that he has planned and he's only getting a very early start on the project."
Besinger has not yet pinned down a schedule for construction with the city, Maurer said; an expected date of completion was not available Tuesday.
Downed trees were scattered across the lot on Tuesday morning, and several logs lay piled near the entrance. A chain-link fence separates the area from Hopkins Park.
Besinger will use the entrance to the Parkside Drive Apartments for his town home complex, Maurer said, which reaches back toward Hopkins Park's baseball fields.
No valid phone listing for Besinger could be found Tuesday.
