No injuries in Saturday night fire

By Chronicle staff

A cooking fire on Saturday night caused about $40,000 in damage to a Fourth Street home.

No one was injured in the fire.

The DeKalb Fire Department said in a written statement that firefighters were called to 804 N. Fourth St. just before 10 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found smoke pouring from the second-story windows.

Residents who had escaped the house said the fire had started in the second-story kitchen, in an unattended pot of cooking oil on a stovetop.

Firefighters had the fire under control within 15 minutes of arriving, the fire department said in the statement.

The home's residents are being helped by the DeKalb Fire Prevention Bureau and the DeKalb County chapter of the American Red Cross.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul assisted by local grants

The food pantry of the St. Vincent de Paul St. Mary-Christ the Teacher conference has received the assistance of two local grants, according to a news release. The pantry received $3,985 from the DeKalb County Community Foundation and $2,340 from the Jewel-Osco Corporation.

The community foundation grant enabled the pantry to secure a commercial-size refrigerator, allowing it to begin stocking refrigerated goods, sturdy shelving and two large cargo moving carts to reduce the amount of heavy lifting required of volunteers. The Hunger Relief Grant from Jewel-Osco provided $750 in additional meat from the Northern Illinois Food Bank and allowed the purchase of stocking carts and a large mobile shelving unit.

The food pantry, at 320 Fisk Ave. in DeKalb, is open three hours a week and serves more than 200 families a month. A mobile food pantry distributed 10,000 pounds of food at Easter and offered families free clothes.
