Horses die in barn fire

Ten horses died early Thursday morning after a barn caught fire in rural Clare.
Fire personnel from at least nine local fire departments were called about 12:45 p.m. to the 5800 block of Rich Road in Clare for a structure fire, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
A passer-by called in the fire, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said, which was on the property of John and Amy Klink.
“It appears to be accidental in nature,” Scott said.
Another horse barn on the property was not damaged, Scott said, and no people were injured.
Hueber LLC in Creston has set up an account to accept donations to buy feed for the Klinks, who still have at least nine other horses on their property, Hueber office manager Kristin Goodbred said. Donations can be dropped off at the store at 110 S. Main St. or by calling Goodbred at 815-393-4879.
Fire departments that responded to the fire were Cortland, Creston, DeKalb, Kirkland, Malta, Maple Park, Rochelle, Shabbona and Sycamore, as well as some from Ogle County, Scott said. Crews were on scene until about 7:30 a.m., according to the news release.
Authorities are still investigating the fire.
