Candidates file for Sycamore and DeKalb elected office

Nineteen people are vying for five elected positions in DeKalb, a sign that the upcoming election will be anything but dull.
Each of the city's five races are contested, with five people running for city clerk, five wanting to represent DeKalb's 6th Ward, and four vying for the 4th Ward position. There are three mayoral candidates and two hopefuls for the 2nd Ward.
Monday was the last day for candidates seeking office in local governments – including cities, towns, townships, villages, and school boards – to file their papers for the April 7 consolidated election.
Lynn Fazekas, Paul Kallembach and Acting Mayor Kris Povlsen are running for DeKalb mayor. Fazekas and Povlsen announced their intentions in late November.
Kallembach turned in his papers to the city clerk's office at about 3:45 p.m. Monday. Kallembach said Monday that he's running for mayor because he will listen to constituents without pushing a personal agenda.
"I believe that it's time that to get some common sense back into the city council," he said. "A lot of taxpayers and businessmen are not happy in this town with high taxes."
In the 2nd Ward, Alderman Tom Teresinski is running against Bob Carlson.
The 4th and 6th Wards also offer an array of competition.
Fourth Ward candidates vying for the open seat include John Anderson, T.J. Batteast, Brendon Gallagher and Matthew Kapustianyk. In the 6th Ward, candidates include Alderman Dave Baker, Jared Lash, Michael “Max” Maxwell, Craig Roman and Eugene Smith.
The open city clerk position also had a high number of bids: Katherine Gannon, Steve Kapitan, Pat Mossholder, Liz Peerboom, and Kay Phillips have filed for that position.
In Sycamore, only one of six races is being contested. Running for an open seat in the 4th Ward are three candidates: Michael Fogelsanger, Deborah Swedberg and Janice Tripp.
Alan Bauer and Pete Paulsen are hoping to retain their seats as 1st and 2nd Ward aldermen, respectively. In the 3rd Ward, Steven Braser has filed for the open seat. Incumbent Mayor Ken Mundy and City Clerk Candy Smith are each running unopposed for another term in office.
