Underage party leads to arrestBy CARRIE FRILLMAN - cfrillman@daily-chronicle.comA Genoa woman surrendered herself to authorities Friday afternoon at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant for delivery of alcohol to minors. Police issued the warrant for 39-year-old Robin Grabowski on Thursday. She turned herself in about 1:30 p.m. Friday and paid 10 percent of the a $10,000 bond to avoid being held in custody, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said. Grabowski hosted a New Year’s Eve underage drinking party at her home in the 15000 block of Route 72 in rural Genoa that led to one minor being hospitalized for alcohol poisoning and a diabetic coma, according to police. Genoa police said they first learned about the party around 10 a.m. Jan. 1, when they received a call about a 17-year-old boy who was breathing but was not responsive. Genoa police Chief Patrick Solar said the boy’s friends took him home and told the police about the party. Grabowski is the mother of one of the 12 or fewer Genoa-Kingston High School teens that attended the party, police said. She faces six criminal charges: Five are Class A misdemeanors of unlawful delivery of alcohol to minors, and one is a Class 4 felony of delivery of alcohol to a minor that indirectly resulted in his alcohol poisoning and diabetic coma, according to court records. A Class 4 felony is punishable by 1-3 years in prison, according to state statutes. A Class A misdemeanor is punishable by less than a year in prison. The students do not face criminal charges, but a list of their names has been released to the district, Genoa-Kingston Schools Superintendent Scott Wakeley said. Five of the six students listed in court reports are athletes at Genoa-Kingston High School, and one is not, according to team rosters. The district’s athletic code of conduct states that athletes caught for the first time using tobacco, alcohol or drugs will be suspended from competing in one-fourth of the athletic contests during the season. Wakeley said Friday that he expects administration to take action in disciplining the student athletes next week. The delay is because the district is cooperating with the sheriff’s office and does not want to interfere with the ongoing criminal investigation, Wakeley said. Grabowski is next scheduled to be in court Jan. 23. |
