NIU baseball adds pair Northern Illinois added a pair of signees to its 2008 baseball recruiting class, bringing in Major League Baseball draftee Troy White and three-sport standout Tom Barry to a class that already was listed at the top of the MAC and the state by Perfect Game Crosschecker in the spring. White, Barry and the rest of the signees will join the team for the 2009 campaign. White was selected in the 48th round by the Cleveland Indians in June's Major League Baseball Draft after earning all-state and all-area selections as co-MVP of the Chicago Public League. He hit .533 and slugged .925 with 64 hits, seven home runs, 47 RBIs while helping Whitney Young to a 29-5 record and city and regional titles.

Sastre retains Tour lead SAINT-ETIENNE, France (AP) - Carlos Sastre of Spain retained the overall lead and Marcus Burghardt of Germany won the 18th stage of the Tour de France as the race left the Alps on Thursday. Sastre leads CSC teammate Frank Schleck of Luxembourg by 1 minute, 24 seconds. Bernhard Kohl of Austria is third, 1:33 behind, and Cadel Evans of Australia is fourth, 1:34 back.

Iraq won't be at Olympics BAGHDAD (AP) - Just two weeks before the start of the Olympics, Iraq was told Thursday it's not welcome in Beijing because of a political feud in Baghdad that angered the games' guardians and exiled a country that arrived to a roaring ovation at the opening ceremony four years ago. The International Olympic Committee told Iraqi sports officials in a letter that it would uphold its ban imposed in June after the government in Baghdad replaced its national Olympic panel with members not recognized by the IOC.
