Nichols transfers Guard Jarvis Nichols has transferred from Northern Illinois to Emporia State University. Nichols was the second-leading scorer for the Huskies last season with 9.9 points per game. Nichols is the seventh player from the 2007-08 men's basketball team roster to leave NIU with eligibility remaining.

NIU makes tennis hire Pawel Gajdzik was name the Northern Illinois men's tennis coach on Tuesday. He is the 10th men's tennis coach in school history. Gajdzik, who served as the volunteer assistance since 2002, played a key role in Baylor's success during his tenure, as the Bears advanced to the NCAA Tournament in all seven seasons, including their 2004 National Championship and runner-up finish in 2005. Gajdzik replaces Pontus Hiort who resigned in May to pursue other career opportunities. NIU returns five letterwinners for the 2008-09 campaign, including 2008 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, Brian Livingston.

Telling number 581 Yards Kevin Jones rushed for with the Detroit Lions last year before an ACL injury ended his season. Jones, who signed with the Bears on Tuesday, had eight touchdowns and a 3.8 yard-per-carry average in 2007.

Blackhawks sign 3 CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Blackhawks has signed center Colin Fraser and defensemen Aaron Johnson and Doug Janik to one-year contracts. Terms of the deal were not disclosed Tuesday. Fraser appeared in five games with the Blackhawks last season. The 23-year-old also had 17 goals and 41 points in 75 games with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. The 25-year-old Johnson spent last season with the New York Islanders and got two assists in 30 games. Columbus originally picked the 6-foot-2, 211-pound Johnson in the third round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Janik has 15 points in a seven-year professional career. The 28-year-old spent five years in the Buffalo Sabres organization, then two seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
