Kill wins award Northern Illinois football coach and former Southern Illinois footbal coach Jerry Kill will be awarded the Liberty Mutual 2007 Coach of the Year award for his last season at SIU. Kill will receive the award, along with a $50,000 check for the Coach Kill Cancer Fun with his wife Rebecca, Liberty Mutual, Southern Illinois Healthcare and the SIU Alumni Association at the Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale, for an awards presentation. Liberty Mutual will also present a $20,000 donation to the SIU Alumni Association. The donation will be used to create a scholarship endowment fund.

McGrane makes it to MLS Former Northern Illinois men's soccer standout Justin McGrane made his first appearance with Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire reserves in the team's match against the D.C. United reserve squad, Sunday. “It's a great situation for one of our soccer players to play in an MLS reserves game,” NIU head men's soccer coach Steve Simmons said. McGrane checked in as a defender for the second half of the Fire's 5-4 loss to United. “The Fire called me up to see if there were any guys who were capable,” Simmons said. “Justin's time at the combine probably helped him.”

Mendenhall leaves U of I NORMAL (AP) - Running back Walter Mendenhall has made his plans to transfer from Illinois final, enrolling at Illinois State as a grad student and joining the football team. Redbirds coach Denver Johnson says Mendenhall has started working out with the team. Mendenhall left Illinois after getting only limited playing time. He carried the ball four times for 57 yards last season. His brother, Rashard Mendenhall, led the Illini and the Big Ten in rushing. The Steelers drafted him in the first round of this year's NFL draft. Walter Mendenhall will compete for playing time with last year's starter, Geno Blow, and three other tailbacks.
