Northwestern makes hire EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) - Northwestern University named Joe McKeown, who had a 19-year tenure at George Washington University and has compiled 509 career wins, as the women's head basketball coach on Monday. “There is no question that he is one of the best and most accomplished coaches in college basketball right now. Joe's experience and commitment is unmatched,” Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips said at a news conference.

Strahan retires EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan retired Monday after a 15-year NFL career with the New York Giants that was capped by a Super Bowl title four months ago. The 36-year-old Strahan, the NFL's active leader in sacks, informed the front office in the morning without telling his coaches and teammates. Strahan is walking away from a $4 million salary for the final year of his contract. He has long said he wants a job in television.

Telling number 67 New Northern Illinois golfer Adam Rosenthal's low round from his senior season at Eden Prairie High School. Rosenthal signed with the Huskies Monday.

Pistons have new coach DETROIT (AP) - Michael Curry will be the Detroit Pistons head coach next season after only one year as an assistant. A former teammate is not surprised. Curry is set be introduced as Detroit's new coach at a news conference Tuesday, Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars told The Associated Press.

Former Bear retires LAKE FOREST (AP) - Marcus Robinson retired Monday as a member of the Chicago Bears, the team with which he enjoyed his most success and set a club record in 1999 for yards receiving in a season. Robinson spent the first six of his 11 seasons with Chicago and decided to retire with the team that drafted him out of South Carolina in the fourth round in 1997. He played the past five years with Baltimore, Minnesota and Detroit.
