NIU's Davis waiting for his NFL callBy John Sahly - jsahly@daily-chronicle.comClinton Portis to his left. Jason Campbell calling plays. This was the life of the last three days for former Northern Illinois tight end Brandon Davis while he competed at the Washington Redskins' mini-camp. Davis said he thought he did well in drills, and now waits for a phone call from either the Redskins or another NFL team. The Redskins have organized team activities in June and training camp starts at the end of July. “They didn't give us a time or a date but they said if they needed us they'll call,” Davis said. “For everything they threw out at us, once you pick it up you do well. So much of it is a process.” Davis also may have gotten some help from his competition. Redskins' second round pick and former Southern California tight end Fred Davis missed Sunday morning's workout because he overslept. “Every practice counts,” new Redskins head coach Jim Zorn was quoted as saying on the team's website. “There's no question (Davis) had a setback.” As for the superstars he was next to in the huddle, Brandon Davis wasn't star struck by the running back Portis or the quarterback Campbell, but he was certainly impressed by the events of the entire weekend. “It's unlike anything else I've ever experienced in my life,” Davis said. “I had to take it all in that I was playing with an NFL team and the whole thing was such a positive experience.” There was one other thing Davis was surprised about. “I thought in the NFL everyone had their own agenda,” Davis said. “But once you get talking with them they're just like anyone else. I was shocked by that. It's just like being back in the locker room in DeKalb.” If Davis made enough of an impression in three days, DeKalb won't be his last stop on an official football roster. |
